Boulder 1108 Phonostage

Power. Finesse. Extended frequency response. Speed. Delicacy. Control. Spaciousness. Precise imaging. Rhythm. Dynamics. Involvement. Musicality. The list goes on. Selecting only a few of these traits and asking any audio product to achieve them is quite a daunting task. Looking at the list and then listening to the 1108 Phono Preamplifier, it immediately becomes apparent that it can do all of them. With ease. For quite a lot of people, vinyl or phono playback was the first time they had heard of Boulder. The degree to which our phono preamplifiers pushed the limits of analog performance forward was shocking to many and it drew quite a lot of attention. Decades later the 1108 is doing it all over again. With ease.

The Boulder 1108 Phonostage combines precision analog design with exceptional flexibility for vinyl playback. Dual pairs of balanced inputs accommodate multiple turntables, cartridges, or tonearms, while fully-balanced input circuitry exploits the naturally balanced output of phono cartridges. The proprietary 985 gain stage—engineered specifically for this component and housed in a solid aluminum block—delivers gain settings of 70 dB for moving-coil and 44 dB for moving-magnet cartridges, compatible with virtually any phono cartridge. Removable rear-panel Personality Cards enable flexible resistive and capacitive loading adjustments for both MC and MM configurations. Beyond traditional RIAA equalization, the 1108 offers EMI, FFRR (London/Decca), and Columbia EQ curves for pre-1955 LP playback. A low-cut filter eliminates turntable rumble and noise from damaged records. Interlocking casework provides vibration damping and shielding of the delicate analog signal. Dual pairs of balanced outputs allow simultaneous connection to preamplifiers and recording devices.
