The Solo Metaphisto does not disappoint
Gryphon Audio enthusiasts will be happy to know Rasmussen did not cut corners on this power amplifier. At the time, monoblock construction was uncommon and most manufacturers would create a bridged version of an already existing two-channel product. Bridging joins the stereo channels in order to form one amplifier with increased voltage and only a small increase output power. Additionally, the side effects include increased distortion and increased difficulty in the amplifiers' ability to drive low-impedance loudspeaker loads.
The Gryphon Mephisto Solo beautifully eliminates these issues by running two stereo channels in parallel for unchanged output and voltage, half the distortion and double the current. Gryphon Audio has always stressed their philosophy that high-current capability is a fundamental parameter in their amplifier design. This allows the Mephisto to maintain the dynamic integrity of the audio signal with even the most reactive loudspeaker loads and truly bring out the best of any loudspeaker.
By isolating power channels in their own enclosures, the power amp has extra advantages over the competition. Everything from rectifiers, to gain stages are separate so what happens in one channel at any given time is independent of the other channel. This eliminates the possibility of inter-channel crosstalk. By doing this, the Mephisto Solo drives loudspeakers with greater control and command while delivering a more rich, detailed and expansive soundstage. Additionally, mono amplifiers provide increased the flexibility of placement in a listening room.
The Metaphisto Solo is an enormous amplifier capable of delivering its best at any volume setting, from background levels to full throttle.
Underneath the Mephisto Chassis
To produce the pure power and control, the Solo utilizes custom Holmgren transformers that have an abundence of filtering capacity for high pulse current. It's fully regulated gain stage power supple offers owners both safety and reliability through the years. The filtered power supply eliminates high-frequency noise and voltage spikes with out sacrificing capacity. This helps to enhance crispness, increase soundstage depth and aids in focusing sound. Despite the complete elimination of feedback, this power amp offers over 350 MHz of bandwidth.
Only the finest components are employed throughout for optimal electrical and audio characteristics. The voltage amplification stage incorporates high-speed Zetex surface mount transistors with minimal capacitance and high DC current gain (Hfe) and the output stage employs high-speed Toshiba pre-driver transistors.
A fully symmetrical, regulated low noise voltage supply has been used for all voltage amplification sections. For each monoblock, eight 56,000 microFarad capacitors with low ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) and a total capacity of 448,000 microFarad/100V smoothes the voltage to the output supply. Static shielding isolates primary and secondary windings in the massive dual Holmgren transformers designed and built especially for the Gryphon Mephisto Solo.
By eliminating output relays, Gryphon Mephisto Solo achieves exceptionally low output impedance. Because output relays that can handle huge constant currents tend to have poor low to moderate signal transfer characteristics, the best relay is quite simply no relay at all.
